What is self esteem?

Self esteem is how you feel about yourself. It is your opinion of yourself and it can be high or low. High self esteem is a good opinion of yourself and low self esteem is a bad opinion of yourself.

The importance of self esteem


Self esteem is crucial and is a cornerstone of a positive attitude towards living.

It is very important because it affects how you think, act and even how you relate to other people. It allows you to live life to your potential. Low self esteem means poor confidence and that also causes negative thoughts which means that you are likely to give up easily rather than face challenges. In addition, it has a direct bearing on your happiness and well-being.

How does self esteem differ from self image?


Self esteem is how you feel about yourself. Self image is how you see yourself and how you believe others see you. They are closely connected because if you have a poor opinion of yourself, your self esteem will be low. Image has to do with perception. How you see yourself is vital because this will affect your behavior, your thinking and how you relate to others. People respond to you either positively or negatively according to how confident you are. Your confidence in relationships depends on the image you have of yourself. 

Why girls are especially vulnerable?


Self esteem is crucial for girls because we live in a world that constantly tells girls how they should look and sets very narrow limits for what is considered 'beautiful'. Girls are also told what they should and shouldn't do professionally. We should help our daughters to value their unique beauty and stay true to themselves. While 7 in 10 girls believe they are not good enough, is there any wonder that only 3% of Fortune 500 CEOs are women? Or that only 34 women have ever served as governors, compared to 2,319 men?

10 Tips to help you become more confident

  1. Focus on who you are and what you like about yourself. Why do your friends like you?

  2. Prepare thoroughly for any task so that you can be sure you are ready. Knowing that you have prepared well will make you better able to cope with anything that may come up.

  3. Always smile and stand up straight. Your posture and smile will project confidence and you will feel better able to cope with anything. You will also find that others respond to you better and this will give you an added boost.

  4. Set reachable goals for yourself and break difficult tasks into smaller steps. You will be able to believe that you can achieve your larger goals if you can see the clear steps towards it and know that you can be successful by taking these smaller steps.

  5. Avoid comparing yourself with others. Be yourself and accept that life is not a race against others but your self confidence depends on you and your personal needs. Set your own standards and allow yourself to overcome challenges at your own pace.

  6. Reward yourself when you succeed no matter how small the achievement. Remind yourself that you are moving forward with determination and that you are one step closer to achieving your goal.

  7. When you come to challenging and difficult moments relaxing will enable you to control your negative emotions and project more positive ones.

  8. Look for a model (someone who has self confidence) and learn from them. What is it they do that makes them confident, how do they act? Often if you act confidently you will feel more self assured. Sometimes a smile is all you need but there are many other steps you can take to feel more relaxed in any given situation.

  9. Focus on your achievements rather than on your failures. If you do find yourself thinking about how you failed then look at what you managed to do right and how you could correct what you did next time. This change in attitude makes you more positive and that outlook will change how you cope with all the challenges you face.

  10. Act as if you were self confident! You will feel more confident.
